"DEAL WITH IT!" by P, Utah, suburban graffiti
Graffiti art is and always will be debated: is it art, destruction of private property, both? No matter what side of the barbed wire fence you land on, one thing is for certain: the movement has produced some recognized, respected names in the art world, and for good reason. (see some fantastic work here). So what to do with Utah-native and natural born rebel, P? His much-heralded debut fits the graffiti movement in theory – it ‘tags’ a physical space not created for art. But while its size and scope are ambitious, it lacks the playful muscle well done graffiti metes out. One wonders if the artist was more bent on simple destruction rather than commentary; reports that this work was completed in less than 17 seconds hint to the latter. Note to P: destruction is child's play, creation is all growed up.
