"Hello, Gotham" by S, Chicago. Mixed media

You wanna know how I got these scars?
Heath Ledger’s tormented Joker literally stole the show in last year’s epic addition to the Batman franchise, The Dark Knight. His posthumous Oscar was a fitting, and well-deserved tribute to a devoted, disciplined artist. The young Aussie certainly left quite an impression on Chicago artist, S; one glimpse at his haunting new master craft, “Hello, Gotham”, and you are hit with the urge to hide all the sharp pencils in the house. But what’s most disturbing about this piece is S’s unmistakable penchant for dressing down the horror to deeper effect; the selection of pastel, stripey, short-sleeve children’s garb and freshly painted pink nails coddles the devil in swaddling clothes. Not only does he walk amongst us, S implies, but can assume the benevolent form of a bubbly toddler at the neighborhood park. Looks like the joke’s on you, suburbia. Run, jog, or rollerblade but you most certainly cannot hide.
